Cool Kitty!

greetings ~~

I’m KK, and I am currently a full-time student in college. I am Hapa, I love sea turtles (aren’t they so cool??), music and pondering about our shared world.

You’ll probably see me posting about various things relating to environmental racism, social justice and Mottainai values. My journey into the realm of sustainability began amidst the beautiful and breathtaking lands of Michigan, where I spent cherished summers and winters, surrounded by the vibrant nature and wildlife. Driven by this profound connection to the beauty of our environment, my passion was ignited to protect our planet and it’s inherent beauty, especially to do with turtles :).

While it started with my love for preserving nature, I quickly developed new passion within the realms of social justice and environmental equity.

Growing up in the 5th ward of Houston, when I would return home from times in Michigan, I I knew that not all people have access to these beautiful places, or furthermore, choices in what is best for their environment. As I moved out of adolescence, the things around me started to be more realized, and I became to know that where I would visit in Michigan vs. where I lived all year round had different socio-economic stipulations and privileges. I became fervently drawn to the imperative of addressing environmental injustices, particularly in communities ravaged by disaster and climate change, and my local communities that did not have access to social services and those that experience disproportionate environmental burdens.

My focus extends to fostering sustainable practices that honor the interconnectedness between humanity and our planet in connecting my two passions. For me, sustainability isn’t just a concept; it’s a call to action rooted in the belief that we must safeguard our planet while simultaneously advocating for marginalized communities. My dedication stems from the
conviction that a more equitable future demands not only the preservation of our natural world but also the amplification of marginalized voices.

At the root, my passion for sustainability is a testament to my unwavering commitment to building a future where all voices are heard and valued equally, where environmental stewardship and social justice converge in harmony.

As I embarked on this journey to create Sustainable Kitty, my vision was clear: to establish a haven where individuals from diverse backgrounds, including BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities, as well as those dedicated to social and environmental justice, could not only feel safe but also access the resources needed to educate themselves, advocate, and feel validated in their efforts. Growing up, I internalized the feeling of insignificance in speaking my mind about these issues and feeling as if I could not make a change. However, I’ve come to realize the profound significance of my own voice. Now, I firmly believe that my voice holds paramount importance and that with community behind me, I can make a change. And as I am still learning to speak out loud and feel confident, I know that I am capable and good enough.

My earnest wish is to convey to you the same truth: that your voice carries unparalleled importance. Together, let us demonstrate that your voice is not just valuable but indispensable. May we inspire each other to live authentically, guided by a deep-seated love and respect for one another. At the core of our mission lies a fundamental question: What does sustainability truly mean and look like, especially within the complex tapestry of today’s political and social landscape, and how can we apply this in a way that empowers everyone in the process? My time here in college has been marked by exploration and growth in these areas, and I invite each of you to join me in this ongoing quest for understanding and action.

Together, we possess the power to effect change through the pillars of community, unwavering passion, and the collective wisdom born from acknowledging the challenges we face.

One value I truly believe is vital is the value of awareness. I firmly believe that awareness serves as a formidable shield; by shedding light on issues and ensuring their visibility, we compel others to confront them head-on. It is within this space of clarity and acknowledgment that meaningful transformation begins to take shape. It is within this space of clarity that the shield of this shared knowledge prevents history from repeating itself.

With that said, let us forge our path to uncover the essence of sustainability together, while being cognizant and aware of our past and history. May this collective serve as not only a repository of knowledge but also a nurturing environment where each of us can cultivate our understanding and actively participate in the journey towards a more sustainable future.

And Remember, Sustainability is not a state of BEING, it is a constant state of DOING . This is merely a social construct made to withhold us in the grips of “reality.” BE FREE!!!

Welcome home, and let’s embark on this transformative journey together.

KK ♡
